Day 5
Posted on 01 December 2006 by Clive Gott
One of the benefits of undertaking my adventures through a charity is that any trip we undertake has outstanding support. On this trip the doctor is the same guy who came to Kilimanjaro with us. Neal had given us permission to contact him if we needed any advice or just to chat and, as we don't live too far apart, I contacted him and arranged to meet him for lunch before my trip around Ripon. I was armed with as many questions as I could think of. He gave me some great advice. As always, I ask people who have more experience than me for advice. It was one of those meetings where, when it's over, half of me was very excited about the adventure and half of me wished I hadn't arranged to meet him at all! I came away with yet another list of 'stuff' and drugs that I would need. I was much more confident about it all now, though.
I will take anti-altitude sickness tablets this time* along with some special antibiotics specifically for the region we are travelling to. I'm going to see Dr Hayes on Thursday for these and to ask if he will give me some 600g anti-inflammatory tablets for my knee. I'm excited now and looking forward to training and getting to the mountain.
I went to Ripon and did some hills on the way home - 4.5 miles with everything on again. The sack is becoming a part of me now. Perhaps I am ready to put some more sand in.
When I got home I received my acceptance for the London marathon next year. At least I have something to keep training for when we get back. I might even be looking at a sub 40 hour MdS in 2008...
* When I climbed Kilimanjaro in 2004 I was not aware of anti-altitude sickness tablets so didn't use any.
