Day 1

Posted on 27 November 2006 by Clive Gott

I bought my rucksack for the event. I do have several back packs and rucksacks but this adventure calls for a 75 litre + bag and I didn't have that one. I made my first trip to Nevisport in York. The guys in the shop are very patient as well as very knowledgeable so I listened, tried on, and listened some more before finally deciding on my rucksack for the adventure.

On the way home I stopped at the B&Q Warehouse to buy sand. We had been told to prepare to spend at least some of the time on the mountain carrying our own kit and some camp equipment and that we would be expected to carry upwards of 20 kilogram's at times so I decided that I would train with 20k in the bag to acclimatise. I bought a bag of builders sand and a pack of small plastic bags.

Once at home I weighed out the sand into bags of 1k and 3k and placed them strategically around the pockets of my rucksack...then I picked it up! It didn't take too long to realise that I wasn't ready to carry 20k yet so I started off with 10k and will 'up' the weight as I grow stronger and more confident.
